Day 21 Sugar Detox

Day 21 Sugar Detox

That's right...day 21! Amen to that. You know what i learned in this time...SEVERAL things. Here's a  little synopsis...

1. Sugar Detox will make you feel MAD...not angry mad, but WHERE'S the chocolate mad.

2. Too many foods have sugar in them...I don't mean just processed stuff because that is the obvious. I mean fruit, skyr, yogurt, some veggies...etc. Things that are essential to health.

3. Sugar Detox can be hard if you are gluten free, meat free, casein free, dairy free, etc. I know there is a book out there for the specific 21 DSD and it has recipes geared towards this (more Paleo), BUT I am not rich or looking to spend money to detox via a book.

4. I ate foods that I would normally not eat to get nutrients in because of #3. That makes me sad :(

5. I honestly do not feel any different than I did 21 days ago. My belly still bloats (probably from my SIBO), I still feel like a sluggish snail (probably because I do more than I can handle), my moods are nuts (probably because I do more than I can handle), I'm tired/fatigued....same old same old.

6. I am not saying that I thought a sugar detox would FIX this and I am not saying that no one should ever do one...I am just saying I am usually pretty strict with my eating and I do not indulge very often, I have dietary restrictions so I feel this may have been good for someone else, but as for me....not really sure I had too much more to cut out.

7. I made it to the end and now that it is over I do not feel I need to go off the deep end and eat all the sugary things in sight, BUT at least when I want something I know I can tine it down a notch and eat less than i did prior.

8. It's hard to stay on track when sugary things are all around you, your family is eating them and it seems everyone wants to offer you some.

9. Prep for this is essential...when I prepped I did better. Towards the end...I had not prepped much and it was a lot harder.

10. Doing a detox on a BUSY schedule is MURDER....I barely have time to take a crap in my every day life and then I just add more things to my schedule and phewwwww...overwhelmed....see #9.

Day 10 Sugar Detox

Day 10 Sugar Detox

Today's the day I shall call this the "half way hump". Just 11 more days.

Todays has been good. As per the usual....INSANELY busy.

Lets just talk about this busy. I wake up at 5am...cook meals for the day (esp if I did not cook the day prior)...shower, get dressed, inbetween all that I have to wake up my teenager approx 10,000 times while yelling at the dogs to quit barking outside for fear they will wake up the neighbors. Then I pack said meals, put my face on, brush my hair and teeth. Teeth alone takes about 15-20 minutes because of the twinkly metal I have in there...I mean have you ever had to floss with braces...YIKES. Start the car so I don't freeze to death because there's not much meat on this little body to keep it warm and definitely not enough fur. Wake up the teenager 10,000 more time and pray at least one of them gets her out of bed. *kiss kiss* and truck it off to work...hopefully missing all the red lights and traffic. Get to work...STRESS OUT ALL DAY....ahhhh the nurse life. Leave work to go to school. ONLY to realize you have no idea which floor of the parking garage you parked on today because....you went in so early and was still half asleep. Arrive at school only to see all the parking spots are 8 million miles away. Learn a bunch of mumba jumba with a bunch of kids...there's the teenagers again. Drive home in the freezing cold car in the dark...ugh. Get home to make some dinner for myself because no offense to my hubby, BUT Dominos is not my idea of dinner. Then sit down to blog only to find I am soon freakin tired and had such a busy day that I missed LUNCH pics. Guess what...time to start this shindig all over again tomorrow. LORD HELP ME NOW.

BREAKFAST

Hard Boiled Eggs
* 2 farm fresh eggs hard boiled

* 1 medium avocado

Supper

Day 6 Sugar Detox

Day 6 Sugar Detox

Breakfast

Scrambled Eggs and Bacon
*2 scrambled eggs with a dash of salt and black pepper
*2 strips of uncured bacon (I only ate one and gave the other to my hubby)

LUNCH

Confession time....I cleaned my house VERY THOROUGHLY and time got away from me so I did not eat lunch. Probably not the healthiest of ideas, BUT when I get busy I lose all track of time.

Supper

Homemade Pasta e Fagioli Soup (Healthy Version)
*1 pound organic grass fed beef browned (you can use turkey burger as instead of beef)
*6 oz gluten free brown rice pasta shells (cooked el dante)
*1 cup chopped celery
*1 cup chopped carrot
*1 small red onion chopped
*1 small yellow onion chopped
*1 15oz can dark red kidney beans (Eden Organic has BPA free cans, rinse them)
*1 15oz can light red kidney beans (Eden Organic has BPA free cans, rinse them)
*1 15oz can cannellini Beans (Eden Organic has BPA free cans, rinse them)
*1 15oz can diced tomatoes (chop your own for better taste, I use organic canned)
*1 32oz "box" organic low sodium chicken broth (you can use beef)
*1 16oz jar of tomato sauce (I use organic)
*3 garlic cloves minced (home grown)
*2 tsp chopped oregano
*2 tsp chopped cilantro (fresh is best)
*2 tsp shopped basil (fresh is best)
*2 tsp chopped thyme
*2 tsp parsley (fresh is best)

I cook in my crockpot for 2 hrs on high. I am sure you could serve with some sort of bread, BUT this is a sugar free challenge. Salt and pepper to taste when served.

DESSERT

Grain Free "Branola"

I got the recipe from    http://thepaleoprize.com/?p=2089

For the 2 cups of nuts I used 1/2 cup Macadamia Nuts, 1 cup walnuts and 1/2 cup pecans (along with the 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds and almonds she calls for in the recipe)

Instead of a food processor (which I do not have), I used a baggy and a pan to "smash" the nuts to chopped size.

I also added the 1/3 cup unsweetened shredded coconut and 2oz of raisins she states you can add.

I was not sure how this would taste considering it is sugar free and the fact that my family is used to sugary treats for dessert BUT this stuff wine over like a bang with myself, hubby and daughter. It is
soooooooo good. Make it, try it, share it....GIFT IT.

Keeps in the fridge for 3-5 days.

ENJOY :)

Day 5 Sugar Detox

Day 5 Sugar Detox

OKAY...so I am a big fat (hardly fat...but anyways) CHEATER today.

Let's just get into a little TMI before I explain what I did. I have IBS-C (Irritable Bowel Syndrome - constipation)...I used to flip between IBS-C and D (diarrhea), but no longer. So ..most days I have to treat myself with prunes/prune juice, diet and water intake. SOMETIMES, none of this works, BUT I refuse to take any form of stool softener or laxatives. SO...I have found something that works for me (other than the above mentioned).  CHOCOLATE COVERED RAISINS....I'm telling you, works like a charm every time. Failure day, BUT I have pooped so...AMEN to that. To me it's a win!

BREAKFAST

Scrambled Eggs/Avocado
*3 farm fresh eggs scrambled
*1 medium avocado chopped
*dash of sea salt
*dash of black pepper
*1 TBSP parsley

LUNCH

Broccoli Cheddar Soup
I might have an addiction to works Cheddar Broccoli Soup. I checked the ingredient again today and was shocked to learn that today they added hot sauce. I mean....why? I have never heard of hot sauce in this kind of soup.Whatever works I guess...it tasted the same it did yesterday and the day before.

SUPPER

Salmon/Broccoli/Zucchini
Went out to eat with hubby to Ruby Tuesdays...I have to say it wasn't my salmon i make at home, but it wasn't too bad.

ENJOY:)

Mason Jar Oats
*1/2 cup gluten free rolled oats
*1 1/5 TBSP chia seeds
*1 TBSP ground flaxseed
*2 TBSP unsweetened toasted coconut flakes
*2 TBSP raisins
*1/8 cup almond slivers
*1/8 chopped walnuts
*1 1/2 cup coconut milk
*1/2 green tipped banana chopped

Lunch

Broccoli Cheddar/Onion Soup
Good ole yummy "work soup" again today. Some days I just need a little to get me through...not to mention the time. I also had a whole medium avocado with my soup.

Supper

Stuffed Acorn Squash
*1 large acorn squash baked in the oven for 45 minutes (poke holes or you have an explosion)
*2 tsp cinnamon
*1 TBSP pumpkin seeds
*2 TBSP raisins
*1/4 granny smith apple (these are lowest sugar on the glycemic index of apples)

ENJOY :)
